The Great Fall Collapse of 2008

This didn't happen overnight... the American public is as much to blame for what has happened as anyone. Since before 9/11, America has been afflicted with a disease called Affluenza. Those Christmases on the credit card... that's why we are where we're at. A constant living beyond our means, investing in toys we can't afford and that will be obsolete 6 months later.

One thing is clear. If this continues down the road this bus is headed, well, things will certainly be getting weird real soon. What's gonna happen when the local Burger King or CVS goes under? What happens if suddenly, there is a crazy run to all the banks to withdraw all the available cash? This is this generation's one true test. How does this apathetic, spoiled, and babied youth generation respond?

It's about goddamn time we had a project that we couldn't cheat on...or for that matter one that our parent's couldn't get our grade changed. This is REAL.

McCain Goes All-in

Use any gambling analogy you want, but John McCain has put all his chips onto the table, decided to double down while the dealer is showing a King, and has taken the ultimate risk. Now, the cards will dictate how the rest of this thing goes.

There are only 39 days left until the big showdown and McCain is like a football team down 14 to begin the 4th quarter. No time for trickeration; you kick the ball deep, hope your defense stops them, and maybe you regain the momentum.

Except, nothing McCain has done in the last 5 months has been a "by-the-book" play. It has worked, but eventually, as always, sound defense wins titles, not a grab bag full of trick plays.

The way I see it is McCain is trying to do one of three things: 1) Delay a debate so the vice-presidential contest never happens. 2) Try to corner Obama into losing his cool. Or 3) McCain (along with the Republican members of congress) wants the Bailout deal to be intentionally delayed so Johnny Mac can come in on his white stallion fix the impasse and save the day.

If McCain is somehow able to make number 3 happen (at least as far as the News Media is concerned), then this desperation three from half court might just work. Think about it, McCain gets the bill signed then arrives at Ole Miss with just a few minutes to spare, debates Obama, then says I cared about the economy. Senator Obama just cares about getting elected, then the whole Obama is just a celebrity comes back into play.

There's still more than a month to go... the shit hasn't even really hit the fan yet.

Welcome to the Great Fall of 2008

The title of this blog came to mind in the steamy summer months of August and September. The economy is shit, our government is shit, the media that is supposed to keep them honest, is probably the most shit of them all. This is said coming from someone who is knee-deep in a stinking swamp of crap...forced to write about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes rather than what's important.

So begins a possibly awful autumn. There are more problems than just what we hear on TV everyday. A contested election would shake the foundation of the entire structure of this nation. A total collapse of the economy would change the way people live their everyday lives. And of course, the trillion-pound elephant in the room, if either of the candidates were to die in office, widespread riots could be the norm rather than the exception.

An optimist believes that the country will rebound and a new era of unprecedented success. Everything starts today. Is there a long, hard winter ahead? Or, will it be time a only a short time until we spring back to life? Time will only tell.
